An upgrade made my licenses invalid
by DougR on Jul.30, 2008, under Avaya, Best Practices, IP Office
This is a fairly common comment we hear on the tech support lines. There is one main cause for this that can be fixed at two different levels. Essentially the problem stems from XP/2003 and the way it handles drivers and services in conjunction with an install script that doesn’t stop everything quite well enough. To clear the problem the driver and services have to be freed up.
Direct to Voicemail SC
by DougR on Jul.28, 2008, under Avaya, Best Practices, IP Office
In IP Office 3.2 Avaya releases a tip for a direct to Voicemail short code that makes direct voicemail calls about as easy as they come. For a 4 digit extension simply #xxxx | #N | Voicemail Collect | 0 . Then to get the mail box simply dial # followed by the extension number. The code worked great until the 4.1(15) manager and the 4.2 beta code was released.
IP Office Help
by DougR on Jul.25, 2008, under Avaya, Best Practices, IP Office
The Best source for help on IP Office is always there. It may seem elemental, but it’s often overlooked. At the bottom of each form in manager there is a help button. This opens a searchable local help file. Read more for screen shots and organizations
Get in touch with console positions
by DougR on Jul.22, 2008, under Avaya, Hardware, IP Office
Soft Console can make the life of an operator position much more intuitive. The Avaya IP Office application allows a user to see the status of hundreds of users and groups in an organized and useful application. Soft Console is not a softphone, it still requires a phone, and works best with a headset tied to the phone. In this mode the user can manage the entire process from a PC. Combine this experience with a Touch-Screen or Tablet PC and the receptionist position just went into the next century.
IP Phone Codes
by DougR on Jul.17, 2008, under Avaya, Best Practices, IP Office
Avaya IP Phones in the 46xx and the 56xx series have features built in for administration of some features. These codes are essential for good administration and moves. They can be difficult to find, and understand exactly what is being accomplished. Here is a list of the codes, and the description.
Each code is preceded by pressing the MUTE or the HOLD button. These two buttons should be interchangeable, but depending on the exact phone series and firmware one or the other may not work.

SIP Networking: the SCN alternative
by DougR on Jul.09, 2008, under Avaya, Best Practices, IP Office
IP Office has a great feature for multiple branch offices called Small Community Network or SCN. Features distributed over SCN trunks are a robust offering that makes remote branch offices seamless in the telephony environment. Easy to setup IP trunks share a great deal of information between nodes in the network with the enableing of the Voice Networking Option. Centralized Voicemail, distributed Hunt Groups, and Multi-Site Hot Desk users are as simple as turning the features on. SCN does have it’s limitations.
54xx Upgrades (please wait …)
by DougR on Jul.08, 2008, under Best Practices, IP Office
Digital Phone upgrades are disabled by default in IP Office version 4.1+. This often results in a ‘Please Wait…’ message displayed on early digital phones being installed on a new system. The error message typically states that the control unit has not yet been able to find a suitable source for the upgraded digital phone firmware. The rest of this post will cover how to go about resolving this situation.
