BOOTP Recovery
by DougR on Jan.14, 2009, under Avaya, Best Practices, Documentation, IP Office
IP Office can some times hick-up while loading new firmware. This can be a PC problem, a network problem, or a sun spot firing an intergalactic event. Despite the cause, the resulting RED status light can be quite disturbing, but don’t loose hope. By performing the below procedure a control unit can be brought back to life. This will not clear a blinking RED status light, or a looping reboot as these two conditions are configuration related.
Prerequisites
- Qualified PC
- Installed and working IP Office Manager (doc based on 3.2 Manager tested through 4.2 to be accurate).
- Working IP Office Control Unit
Procedures
- Power Off Control Unit
- Clear all BOOTP entries from the Manager Application. see caveats
- Restart Manager, ensure that no BOOTP entries exist.
- Ensure the PC IP Address is 192.168.42.2 255.255.255.0. default Gw:192.168.42.1(address of ipo)
- Connect via Ethernet directly to the control Unit.
- In Manager select View -> TFTP Log.
- Power on the control Unit.
- Watch TFTP log for the correct IP Address and MAC Address
- Power Off control Unit.
- Create a new BOOTP entry using the MAC and IP Address obtained above. Point bin file using the browse button provided. (typically 2.1(78) or a current version)
- Restart Manager, and ensure the BOOTP entry still exists.
- In Manager select View -> TFTP Log.
- Power on the control Unit.
- Watch TFTP log that bin file transfers correctly.
The Control Unit should now have a green status light and be able to resume normal operation.
Notes:
- Sometimes this procedure may need to be performed several times in order to achieve a successful transfer. If the transfer fails around 80% each time, the memory on the unit is not sufficient. Load the available Loader(3.0_99,3.2_99, etc.) using the procedure above. Also verify that the firmware on the control unit has been above 2.1(35).
- Check the Tech Bulletin for the desired release for complete upgrade steps including intermediate loads if using an older 406 or a 403. Newer systems, except SOE, need only 2.1(78) and the current version.
