Gigabit Switching Overview

As data rates increase in the Enterprise LAN 10/100 or Fast Ethernet is quickly being moved out and replaced with Gigbit switching.  Some manufacturers and lines do not even offer a 10/100 product.  Below is a quick overview of the Gigabit offerings available today from manufacturers Catalyst distributes.

Double your bandwidth for free with 802.3ad

Increasing bandwidth is a constant battle faced by every IT department.  What happens when a high capacity server is hitting the limits of a single Gigabit link.  What happens when 10G is not an option, but 1G is not enough.  Simply connecting another cable is not the answer.  The result will be a total loss of the network or a nice workout for your spanning tree configuration.  The answer comes from the 802.3ad specification, or Ling Aggregation, LAG for short.

DHCP, IP Phones and Multiple VLANs

FIRST WIRELESS LAN VENDOR TO OBTAIN COMMON CRITERIA CERTIFICATION

This morning Aruba issued a press release announcing that it is the first wireless LAN supplier to be awarded a Common Criteria certificate for its Wi-Fi solutions.  Common Criteria - also known as ISO standard 15408 - addresses the protection of assets from unauthorized disclosure, modification, or loss of use arising from both intentional and unintentional causes.  High security users typically require a combination of Common Criteria certification, Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 validation for cryptographic security, and compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 8100.2 security policies for wireless technologies. Aruba now satisfies all three criteria, allowing the company to meet a wide range of new domestic and international government, financial, and commercial applications.

Alternate TFTP Servers

TFTP servers are integral to upgrades on many platforms. On the Avaya IP Office, many times the Manager program acts a TFTP server, but is limited in capacity. Here is a list of free TFTP servers that can help with file transfers via TFTP.

How to Uninstall .NET

Sometimes the Microsoft .NET install can get corrupted which can make it very hard to uninstall.  This can also make your applications crash and get .NET 5000 error.  This error can be seen in the event viewer on the under computer management.

Setting a Domain User as Local Admin

There are several applications that have to run as an administrator user but you don’t want to make that user an admin on the domain.  This can be accomplished by adding a regular domain user as a local admin to the computer where the apps are going to run.  This does not mean make a local user on the computer and add them to the admin group.
